How Much Does a Factory Audit Cost? Audit Types, Scope & Duration

A factory audit has no single fixed price. The total depends on the audit type, factory location, scope and auditor-days, plus any separately charged travel, reporting or follow-up work. Public entry offers can start at a few hundred US dollars: for example, Asia Quality Focus lists product inspections and factory audits from US$298 all-inclusive. That is one provider’s starting offer, not a market average or a UTS quotation. [1]

For a useful budget, first define the decision the audit must support. Checking whether a new supplier operates at the declared site is a different assignment from examining its quality controls, evaluating a production bottleneck or reviewing working conditions against an agreed buyer checklist.

This guide explains how to compare factory audit quotations for sourcing decisions. It does not quote certification fees or establish a universal audit duration.

What Should a Factory Audit Quote Include?

Ask for a total against a written scope, with inclusions and exclusions beside the price. A low daily rate is difficult to compare if one quotation includes report preparation and another charges for it separately.

Cost component What to confirm
Audit preparation Review of your requirements, previous findings and supplier information; any charge for a customized checklist.
On-site auditor-days Number of auditors, time at each site and the processes or departments they will cover.
Travel and accommodation Whether the factory address falls within the quoted coverage and whether travel days are billable.
Report and review Report language, photographs where permitted, findings, limitations and delivery date.
Specialist work Technical expertise, additional modules, interpretation or customer-specific reporting.
Follow-up Whether corrective-action review is included, and the charge for a return visit if needed.
Other charges Applicable taxes, any separately agreed third-party expenses, cancellation terms and rescheduling costs.

Not every item is an extra. The purpose of the checklist is to establish what the quoted total buys, without adding costs twice.

How Does the Audit Type Affect the Cost?

The label “factory audit” can describe several different services. Compare the checklist and deliverables before comparing the price.

Audit or assessment type Main buyer question What changes the workload?
Supplier or factory evaluation Does the supplier’s declared identity and site match the available evidence? Number of locations, operating areas, records and access restrictions.
Quality management system audit How does the factory control quality throughout its processes? Process complexity, record sampling, traceability and depth of investigation.
Production capacity assessment What evidence supports the proposed production plan? Product mix, shifts, line observations, bottlenecks and outsourced operations.
Social or ethical audit What evidence is available about the specified workplace and buyer requirements? Agreed checklist, workforce size, record and interview access, site areas and reporting detail.
Corrective-action follow-up Have agreed problems been addressed with adequate evidence? Number and significance of findings, and whether verification needs another site visit.

A basic site evaluation should not be presented as an in-depth quality-system audit. Likewise, a buyer’s supplier audit is not automatically an ISO certification audit. ASQ distinguishes audits by their purpose and subject, including process and system audits. [2]

For UTS service scopes, review factory evaluation, quality management system audits and social and ethical compliance audits before requesting a quotation.

How Long Does a Factory Audit Take?

A defined manufacturing audit at one site may fit into one day, but the duration must follow the scope. QIMA states that most of its manufacturing audits take one on-site day, with more complex or additional-module work taking longer. This is a provider-specific example, not a duration promise for every factory or audit type. [3]

Separate these three timelines when scheduling:

  • Booking lead time: the time needed to agree the scope, arrange access and schedule an auditor.
  • On-site duration: the time spent reviewing operations, records and other agreed evidence at the factory.
  • Report turnaround: the time between completing the visit and receiving the reviewed report.

Auditor-Days Are Not the Same as Calendar Days

An auditor-day measures one auditor’s working day. Two auditors working for one day represent two auditor-days. One auditor working for two days also represents two auditor-days, although the scheduling and coverage differ. Confirm how the provider defines a working day and handles travel, preparation and reporting.

For an illustrative calculation, let R be the provider’s quoted rate per auditor-day. The estimated total is (R × agreed auditor-days) + any separately quoted expenses or services. Do not add travel, reporting or preparation again if they are already included in the daily rate. This formula explains the billing unit; it does not set a UTS rate.

Two Illustrative Auditor-Day Calculations

Illustrative assignment On-site workload Illustrative on-site fee
One-site supplier evaluation with one auditor for one day 1 auditor-day 1 × R
Two separate factory visits, each with one auditor for one day 2 auditor-days 2 × R

These are calculation examples, not UTS quotations or recommendations that one day is sufficient for either assignment. Actual auditor-days depend on the approved checklist, site access and required evidence. For multiple sites, confirm whether additional travel is included in the quoted price.

Which Scope Details Can Increase the Price?

More Sites, Processes or Shifts

A factory with one assembly area presents a different review task from a supplier that performs machining, surface treatment and assembly across separate locations. State which processes happen on site and which are outsourced. If a critical operation runs only at night, a daytime visit may not provide the evidence you need.

A Deeper Review of a Specific Problem

“Check quality control” is too broad to price consistently. A more useful request is: “Review how incoming components are identified, how rejected parts are segregated and how the factory traces a finished lot back to those components.” That gives the auditor a defined evidence trail to follow.

Workplace Review Scope and Access

For a buyer-requested workplace review, confirm the agreed criteria, workforce size, shift coverage, availability of employment and payroll records, interview arrangements and access to relevant facilities. These details can affect preparation, on-site time and reporting. A UTS social and ethical compliance audit reviews selected workplace evidence against an agreed checklist. It is a supplier assessment for buyer review, not social-responsibility certification or a legal opinion.

Restricted Access or Unavailable Records

Confirm that relevant managers, records and operating areas will be available. If the auditor cannot access essential evidence, the report should identify the limitation. Ask in advance how a partial visit, postponed visit or return visit will be charged.

How to Compare Two Factory Audit Quotations

Use the same scope brief for both providers. Then compare coverage, evidence and total cost rather than treating a lower daily rate as the whole decision.

  1. Match the assignment. Confirm the same factory address, audit objective and checklist.
  2. Compare the time allocation. Check auditor-days and whether each quotation includes the same departments, processes and shifts.
  3. Review a sample deliverable. Look for traceable findings, supporting evidence, limitations and clear follow-up points.
  4. Confirm exclusions. Clarify travel, translation, report review, taxes and any separately agreed specialist costs.
  5. Agree the response to findings. Establish whether the provider only reports findings or also reviews corrective-action evidence.

For example, a single-site identity review and a quality-system audit may both be described as “one factory visit.” They will not necessarily answer the same questions. A quotation is useful only when its scope matches the decision you must make.

If your decision concerns the quality of a particular production lot, compare factory audits and product inspections before deciding which service to request.

How Can Buyers Control Audit Costs Without Losing Useful Coverage?

Prepare the scope before booking. Send current specifications, the supplier’s address, previous problems and the deadline for your sourcing decision. Remove duplicated administrative work where practical, while keeping the checks needed for the risk.

  • Choose the right audit type instead of adding unrelated modules.
  • Confirm that the factory will be operating and the relevant people will be available.
  • Identify separate warehouses and subcontracted processes before the visit.
  • Ask whether document review can be completed before arrival.
  • Use remote corrective-action review only where the evidence is sufficient; physical changes may require on-site verification.

Do not reduce the visit to a brief factory tour if your decision depends on how quality controls actually operate. A cheaper report that leaves your main question unanswered may require a second assignment.

What Information Should You Send for an Accurate Quote?

Copy these fields into your audit request:

  • Supplier: company name, complete factory address and site contact.
  • Products and processes: product category, main manufacturing steps and known subcontracting.
  • Decision: new supplier approval, process review, capacity concern or corrective-action verification.
  • Scope: required checklist, customer requirements, departments and locations.
  • Timing: preferred visit dates, production schedule and report deadline.
  • Known concerns: previous defects, delivery problems, missing records or changes at the factory.
  • Deliverables: report language, evidence requirements and any requested follow-up.

Factory Audit Cost: Frequently Asked Questions

Does a larger purchase order always mean a more expensive audit?

No. Order value can influence the buyer’s risk decision, but it is not the same as audit workload. A small order involving complex processes may need more review than a larger order using a familiar, simpler process. The scope and required auditor-days should explain the quotation.

Does an all-inclusive price cover a second visit?

Only if the quotation says so. Ask whether “all-inclusive” applies to the initial assignment alone and whether corrective-action review, a return visit or rescheduling is included.

Does a factory audit include inspection of my finished goods?

Not automatically. An audit examines the supplier or its processes against the agreed criteria. Checking a particular batch against your product specification is a separate inspection task. If you need both, request distinct scopes and deliverables.
